Molecular mechanisms of NET formation

We aim to understand the biophysical driving forces that lead to chromatin decondensation. Together with the Kruss Lab (Dpt. of Physical Chemistry, Göttingen) we use innovative imaging techniques such as STED microscopy, AFM and life-cell imaging to unravel the fascinating process NET formation.

Inflammatory dermatological diseases 

We use mouse models and human samples to understand the role of the innate immune system, particulary neutrophilic granulocytes, in chronic inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis and systemic lupus erythematosus. 

NETs, neutrophils and melanoma

Our lab has a long-standing interest in the interactions between malignant cells and the innate immune system. We are particularly interested in undertanding how neutrophils and NETs may assist tumor progression, growth and metastasis (image from Erpenbeck et al, JID 2009). 

Nanotechnology in cellular systems

We use nanotechnology approaches to engineer biomimetic surfaces and study receptor-ligand interactions. In cooperation with the group of Dr. K. Amschler (Dpt. of Dermatology) and the Kruss Lab (Dpt. of Physical Chemistry, Göttingen) we strive to understand neutrophil-surface interactions and tumor cell behavior on a single-cell basis (image from Kruss and Erpenbeck et al., ACS Nano 2013).
